Privacy Policy
Last updated: June 18, 2026
At Kariel, your privacy is our foundational principle. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and protect information when you use the Kariel desktop application, the Kariel Web Clipper browser extension, and our website (kariel.app).
1. Our “Local-First” Promise
Kariel is a local-first Digital Asset Management (DAM) application. Your asset library, imported files, metadata, tags, and SQLite database are stored on your device. We do not sync, upload, or process your creative files on Kariel servers. Your workstation is your cloud, and Kariel cannot view the contents of your local library.
2. Information We Collect and How We Use It
While your files remain entirely local, we do collect minimal data required to manage your account, validate purchases, and improve the app.
A. Account & Authentication Data
Kariel may offer authentication via Google Sign-In and Apple Sign-In (powered by Firebase Authentication) for account-related features.
- What we collect: Your email address, basic profile name, and a unique User ID.
- How we use it: Strictly to verify your identity, create your Kariel account, and link your purchase history. We do not access your Google Drive, Apple iCloud files, or any other external services.
B. Subscription & Payment Data
We use RevenueCat to manage subscription rights, and secure third-party payment processors to handle transactions.
- Purchases on macOS: Handled securely by the Apple App Store.
- What we collect: We receive purchase confirmation and subscription status to unlock “Kariel Pro” features. We do not collect or store your credit card information. All payment details are processed directly by Apple.
C. App Telemetry & Usage Metrics
To provide customer support and understand how Kariel is used, we send anonymous, numerical telemetry data to our RevenueCat dashboard.
- What we collect: Basic application preferences (such as system language and active theme), the application version installed, and a unique randomized device identifier.
- Numerical DAM Metrics: To help us improve the software and understand feature adoption, we track strictly anonymous numerical usage statistics. This includes counts such as the total number of assets managed, the number of libraries created, and the usage volume of features like smart folders or custom tags.
- Privacy Guarantee: These metrics are pure numbers. We never collect file names, file paths, folder names, or the text content of your custom tags.
3. Kariel Web Clipper
Kariel Web Clipper connects your browser to the Kariel desktop application running on the same device. Kariel Desktop must be running for saving and capture features to work.
A. Information Accessed
The extension accesses information only as needed to provide a feature that you initiate. Depending on the action you choose, this may include:
- the current page URL, title, favicon, and relevant page metadata
- images, videos, links, and other media available on the current page
- screenshots of a visible page, full page, selected area, screen, or window
- screen, window, tab, or microphone content when you explicitly start a recording
- notes, tags, ratings, folders, and other details that you enter before saving
The extension does not continuously track your browsing history. It does not use accessed content for advertising, profiling, or sale.
B. How Browser Data Is Used
Browser data is used only to perform the save, capture, organization, preview, and compatibility features you request. Selected content and related metadata are transferred to the Kariel desktop application through a loopback connection that remains on your device. They are not uploaded to Kariel servers by the extension.
The extension may directly request user-selected media from its source website so that it can preview or import that media into your local Kariel library. The source website may receive ordinary network information, such as your IP address, as it would when your browser normally loads that content.
C. Browser Storage
The extension uses Chrome’s local extension storage for settings and operational state, such as language, interface preferences, local desktop connection settings, compatibility information, and temporary capture state. This data remains in your browser profile and can be removed by uninstalling the extension or clearing its stored data.
D. Permissions
Kariel Web Clipper requests browser permissions needed for its user-facing features, including access to the active page, context-menu actions, local preferences, notifications, media detection, screenshots, and user-initiated recording. These permissions are not used to monitor unrelated browsing activity.
E. Chrome Web Store Limited Use
The use of information received from Google APIs will adhere to the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
Data accessed by Kariel Web Clipper is limited to providing or improving its single purpose: saving and organizing user-selected web content in the user’s local Kariel library. We do not sell browser data, use it for personalized advertising, transfer it for credit or lending purposes, or allow humans to read it except with the user’s explicit consent, when required for security, or when required by law.
4. Third-Party Services
Kariel integrates with the following trusted third-party services to operate successfully. Each service adheres to strict privacy and security standards:
- Firebase (Google): For secure user authentication.
- RevenueCat: For subscription management and telemetry.
- Apple (App Store): For macOS payments and Apple Sign-In.
Kariel Web Clipper does not include third-party advertising or analytics services.
5. Data Retention and Deletion
You retain full control over your data. Since Kariel is local-first, Kariel does not retain a server-side copy of your asset library. If you wish to delete your cloud account (email, authentication ID, and associated subscription telemetry) from our Firebase and RevenueCat databases, please contact us at the email below, and we will process your deletion request within 30 days.
Browser-extension settings and temporary state are retained in your Chrome profile until you clear the extension’s data or uninstall it. Assets saved through the extension are retained in the local Kariel library until you delete them.
6. Policy Updates
We may update this Privacy Policy when Kariel’s features or legal obligations change. We will update the date at the top of this page when we make changes.
